New Tintype Work

Last Monday I shot another tintype shoot. I wanted to change things up quite a bit from my previous tintype shoots. So I started with the camera I shot with a 5x7 camera giving me much larger plates from the 4x5 I was used too.I do not think I will ever switch back as I love the larger size.I shot these again at Rayko and Michael my Tintype technician informed me had changed his formula of developer resulting in cleaner looking plates.

I booked a wonderful model Ellen Hancock from Look Modeling Agency in San Francisco.
This time I really wanted to work with a stylist and got connected with Tietjen Fischer from Artist Untied she also does Hair and Make Up which makes things even easier.
She brought the most amazing wardrobe to the set and from the first plate on every image was a winner.
By now I have my lighting down when I am shooting these and I include my lighting diagram which I handed off to my assistant Brian Molyneaux we took off all but bare diffusion and got the shutter speed down to 1/8 second.
To see the rest of this shoot please check out the New Images section of my website.

Hey Shane,
Since tintypes are only sensitive to blue light - how are you making use of these lights for that part of the color spectrum? Any color gels on the lights? Are these strobes or hot lights?

Very nice work. I also like your cooler idea with the slots for washing plates.

Hey Jay,
The light are all strobes with the diffusion taking off the soft boxes apart from the first layer.
I have used a blue (kinda like a black light) before but prefer the results I am getting from strobes.
The background was blue I chose it as i knew it would not be too dark.
Thanks
Shnae
